Agafonov learned to fly at the First Russian Aeronautics Society's school at Gatchina Airfield, and was one of the school's first pupils[1].

In 1912, Agafonov was part of a group of civilian volunteer pilots who flew for Bulgaria during the Balkan Wars[2].

He later served as a pilot in the Russian Imperial Air Force during World War I[1].
