[edit] Biography

Baranov began his military service with the Russian army in 1915. In 1916 he was sentenced to eight years of hard labor for anti-government agitation. He was freed after the February Revolution in 1917[1] and later joined the Red Army in 1918. He served in a variety of command and political positions during the Russian Civil War[2].

In August, 1923 Baranov became connected with the air forces for the first time as the Assistant Chief of the Air Forces for Political Affairs. He became Deputy Commander of the Air Forces in October, 1924, and Commander of the Air Forces in December of that same year. From 1925 to 1931 he was simultaneously a member of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR[2].

In June, 1931 Baranov became a member of the Presidium of the VSNKh and Chief of the All-Union Aviation Association. Starting in February, 1932 he was Deputy People's Commissar for Heavy Industry and Chief of the Main Directorate for Aviation Industry[2].

He perished in a plane crash in 1933[2].
