In 1907 the German War Ministry assigned de le Roi, "an airplane enthusiast well versed in foreign developments", to the Transport Directorate's research unit to monitor aeronautical progress in other countries[1].

De le Roi received German pilot's license #309 on October 11, 1912[2].
