- April 18, 1916 The French air unit N.124 Escadrille Américaine is formed, commanded by French Capt. Georges Thenault and including seven volunteer American pilots.[1][2].
- April 20, 1916 The Escadrille Américaine placed on front-line duty at Luxeuil-les-Bains near Switzerland[2].
- May 13, 1916 The Escadrille Américaine flies its first combat mission[2].
- May 18, 1916 Volunteer American pilot Kiffin Rockwell scores the first kill for the French Escadrille Américaine squadron, downing a German L.V.G. reconnaissance airplane[2].
- December 6, 1916 The French Escadrille Américaine squadron is redesignated Escadrille Lafayette in response to German protests to the American government[1].
