Gorrell served in the 1st Aero Squadron during the Mexican Punitive Expedition under Pershing[1].

In August, 1917, Gorrell was named Chief of the Technical Section of the AEF's Air Service, responsible for procurement of the equipment and supplies that the Air Service would need over the course of the next year[2].

By December, 1917, Gorrell had been made chief of "Strategical Aviation" for the AEF[1].
