[edit] Biography

Goryunov joined the Red Army in May, 1918, and completed the Kazan Infantry Course in 1919. He participated in the Russian Civil War in a variety of infantry units, rising to the rank of commander of a rifle battalion[1].

In 1924, Goryunov completed the Borisoglebsk Military Pilots School, where he served as an instructor pilot until 1930. Additionally, in 1927 he completed the Serpukhovsk Advanced School of Air Combat, Gunnery, and Bombing, and in 1932 the Zhukovskii Military Air Academy[1].

Goryunov served as a squadron commander in the Baltic Fleet, and starting in 1937 as an Air Brigade commander. He participated in the Battle of Lake Khasan in August, 1938, as the commander of the 5th Air Brigade[1].

In 1939, Goryunov completed the Command Staff Development course at the General Staff Academy[1].

From November, 1939 to March, 1940, Goryunov participated in the Soviet-Finnish War as commander of the 7th Army's air forces. After the Soviet-Finnish War, he held a variety of command positions: commander of the Kalinin Military District's air forces starting in May, 1940, Chief of the Red Army Air Force's Directorate of Cadre starting in July, 1940, and commander of the Kharkov Military District Air Forces starting in 1941[1].

During World War II, Goryunov served as commander of the 18th Army's Air Forces from June to November, 1941, commander of the North Caucasus Military District Air Forces to June, 1942, and commander of the 5th Air Army from June, 1942[1].

On April 28, 1945, Goryunov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union[1].

After the War, he commanded several different Air Armies until his retirement in 1956[1].
