Ingaunis joined the Russian Army in May, 1915, completed training as a mechanic, and then attended the Petrograd Aviation School. In January, 1916, he was transferred to the Moscow Aviation School for retraining on new aircraft types. From February, 1917, he fought at the front as part of an air detachment. He joined the Red Army in May, 1918, and fought with it on the Eastern and Southern fronts[1]. He was awarded an Order of the Red Banner for his service[2].
After the Russian Civil War, Ingaunis was made Commander of the 2nd Air Squadron[2].
In 1930, Ingaunis along with other pilots completed one of the first long-range flights along the route Moscow-Ankara-Kabul-Tashkent-Moscow[2]. Between 1934 and 1937 he served as the Assistant Commander of the Belorussian Military District Air Forces and Commander of the Kiev Military District Air Forces[1]. He was promoted to the rank of Corps Commander on September 22, 1935[3].
He was arrested on November 29, 1937, accused of being a member of a "terrorist organization", and executed on July 28, 1938[4].
