Kohanskii served during the Russian Civil War, as a company commander, battalion commander, and eventually commander of the 464th Rifle Regiment[1]. He was awarded an Order of the Red Banner in 1921, for his service as assistant regiment commander of the 464th Rifle Regiment[2].
Kohanskii attended the Red Army Military Academy from 1921 to 1923. After that he served as secretary of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Moscow Military District from 1923-24. He served as a military adviser to Turkey from 1924-26, as commander of the 1st Mechanized Regiment (3rd Tank Regiment[3]) from 1928-31, and as commander of mechanized forces for the Leningrad Military District from 1931-34[1].
In 1934, Kohanskii became commander of the 3rd Special Purpose Aviation Brigade[1].
Kohanskii was promoted to the rank of Division Commander (Komdiv) on November 28, 1935[4]. In 1936-7 he studied at the Zhukovskii Military Air Academy, while also serving as commander of the 5th Heavy Bomber Aviation Corps in the Caucasus Military District[1].
Kohanskii was arrested on May 28, 1937, convicted on July 28, 1938, and executed on the same day[5].
