[edit] Biography

Kondratyuk joined the Russian Army during World War I, in August, 1915 as a warrant officer in the ground forces. He joined the Red Guards in November, 1917, and then the Red Army in 1918[1].

During the Russian Civil War, he fought in the ground forces on the Souther and Caucasus Fronts[1].

In 1925, Kondratyuk graduated from the Military Pilot-Observers School in Leningrad. He served as a pilot-observer and an instructor, and held a range of command positions, including commander of an aviation squadron and of an aviation brigade[1].

In February, 1940, Kondratyuk became the deputy commander of air forces for the 1st Army Group. He was promoted to the rank of Major General of Aviation on May 7, 1940[2]. In August, 1940 he became of the 37th Aviation Division in the Trans-Baikal Military District and served in that position until April, 1941[1].

Starting shortly after the German invasion, Kondratyuk became commander of the Tambov Military Pilot's School in July, 1941. He became deputy commander of the air forces of the North-Western Front in September, 1941. In April, 1942 he became commander of air forces for the Western Front. In June, 1942, he became commander of the 6th Air Army. In January, 1943, Kondratyuk became commander of the Main Directorate for Training of Frontal Aviation and a deputy commander of the Red Army Air Forces. Starting in February, 1944, he was commander of the air forces for several interior military districts that were not directly involved in the fighting[1].
