Ludendorff served as the chief of the Second Department of the Prussian General Staff from 1908-1913, and in that capacity was adviser to the Chief of the General Staff von Moltke on matters of military equipment[1].

During World War I, from 1916 through 1918 Ludendorff served as first quartermaster general and was the de facto commander of the German field army[2].
