| ...the Commander of Soviet Air Forces during World War II, Aleksandr Novikov, was featured on the cover of the July 31, 1944 issue of Time magazine and in the issue's cover story, Close to the Earth. The article credits Novikov, along with Minister of Aviation Industry Aleksei Shakhurin and aircraft designers Sergei Ilyushin and Aleksandr Yakovlev, for reversing the fortunes of the Soviet Air Forces after the disastrous start of the war. Ironically, both Novikov and Shakhurin would be arrested by Stalin after the war in 1946 when Stalin's son convinced him that Soviet aircraft were inferior to the aircraft in the West.
