Remarks: Mednis was the first in the USSR to write a study specifically on ground attack aviation.

Col. Artur Karlovich Mednis was a pilot-observer and chief of staff of a ground attack squadron. He went on to become the chief of the faculty at the Zhukovskii Military Air Academy. In 1935 he wrote Tactics of Ground Attack Aviation (Taktika Shturmovoj Aviatsii), which was the first treatise specifically on ground attack aviation that was produced in the Soviet Union[1].

Mednis became a victim of Stalin's purges, arrested on October 12, 1937 and executed on January 9, 1938[2].
