In November, 1916 Monastiryov completed the Gatchina Flight School and received the rating of military pilot. He was appointed as an instructor to the Odessa Aviation School[1].
Monastiryov joined the Red Army in March, 1918 and served as the commander of the 3rd Moscow Aviation Detachment[1].
Monastiryov headed the Air Force Scientific-Test Institute (NII) from 1924 to 1926[2].
