Organizational Structure of the Soviet Air Forces

[edit] Russian Civil War, 1918-1922

The unit structures in the Red air forces immediately following the Bolshevik revolution in November, 1917 closely followed the structures "inherited" from the Imperial Russian air forces. The basic air unit was the aviation unit ("otryad" or "aviaotryad" in Russian) consisting of six to ten aircraft organized into "flights" ("zveno" in Russian) of two aircraft each. Two or more Aviation Units could be combined into an aviation group ("aviagruppa" in Russian)[1].

On May 15, 1918, by order of the People's Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs the Table of Organization and Equipment for an aviation unit was officially set to include six aircraft, four automobiles, five wagons, and 113 personnel. In practice, during the Russian Civil War the number of aircraft and personnel in the aviation units varied widely, usually on the low site[1].
