[edit] Biography

Pavlov was sent to France for flight training. On November 4, 1916 he passed his flight exams and received the rating of Military Aviator. He remained in France until February, 1917, studying advanced flying in the city of Po, and acrobatics and gunnery in the city of Kazo[1].

Upon return to Russia Pavlov joined the 1st Fighter Group commanded by Alexander Kazakov. He scored his only victory of World War I on October 1, 1917, downing a German Roland fighter[1].

After the October Revolution, Pavlov was put in command of the air unit formerly commanded by Kazakov but only managed to get a single Nieuport fighter back to Soviet Russia[1]. In April, 1918 he formed the 1st Soviet Fighter Group which fought in Sviyazhsk and Kazan. On January 11, 1919 Pavlov became Assistant Commander, and then on September 3, 1919 Commander of Air Forces for the 8th Army. In the beginning of May, 1920 he became Assistant Commander, and then in September, 1920 overall Commander of Air Forces for the entire Southern Front[2].

In 1919 Pavlov was awarded an Order of the Red Banner, and in 1920 he received the Order for the second time[1].

During the 1920's Pavlov held a range of command positions, including commander of the Serpukhovsk Advanced School for Air Combat, Gunnery, and Bombing, commander of the Kiev Military District Air Forces (February 1921-1922), and commander of the North Caucasus Military District Air Forces (1922-1923)[1].

Pavlov was promoted to Division Commander (Komdiv) on November 21, 1935[3].

Pavlov ultimately reached the rank of Corps Commander (Komkor) and served as commander of the Moscow Military District Air Forces, and later as Inspector General of the Air Force. In 1936 he wrote his memoirs, "Notes of a Red Pilot"[1].

He passed away in 1936, reportedly due to consequences of wounds received during the Russian Civil War[4].
