Polynin joined the Red Army in 1928, graduated from the Leningrad Air Force Military Theory School in 1929, and from the Orenburg 3rd Military Pilot and Pilot-Observer School in 1931. He became an instructor pilot after graduation[1].
Polynin served as a Soviet volunteer pilot in the Second Sino-Japanese War, for which he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union[1].
In 1938 Polynin became Senior Inspector for Flight Technology in the Air Force Main Directorate. In October, 1939, he became deputy commander of air forces in the Kiev Special Military District. In December, 1939, he became commander of air forces for the 13th Army, which participated in the Soviet-Finnish War. In August, 1940, he became commander of the 13th Bomber Aviation Division[1].
After the start of Operation Barbarossa, Polynin became commander of air forces for the Bryansk Front in August, 1941. In May, 1942, he became deputy commander of the 2nd Air Army, and in September, 1942, deputy commander of the 6th Air Army. In January, 1943, he became commander of the 6th Air Army and remained in that position for the remainder of the war[1].
