The first unit to be equipped with the R-5 was the 20th Light Bomber Squadron, which received an initial batch of eight R-5s on June 14, 1930. In addition to the 20th Squadron, it was planned to equip the 33rd Light Bomber Squadron (Leningrad Military District), 43rd Light Bomber Squadron (Belorussian Military District), and the 42nd Light Bomber Squadron (Moscow Military District) with [[R-5]s by the middle of 1931[1].
