[edit] Biography

Samoilo joined the Russian army and completed the Alekseev Military Institute in 1982 and the General Staff Academy in 1898. He served during World War I in the operations departmnet of the Russian General Staff, and as chief of staff for the Russian 10th Army with the rank of Major General[1].

Samoilo joined the Soviets during the Russian Revolution and participated in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. He served in the Russian Civil War as commander of the 6th Independent Army (November, 1918 to April, 1920), and commander of the Eastern Front (starting in May, 1919). From 1920-21 he served as assistant Chief of Staff for the Red Army, and simultaneously chief of the All-Russian Supreme Headquarters (Vseroglavshtab). He participated in peace talks with Finland in April, 1920 and with Turkey, in March, 1921. In 1922 he became commander of the directorate for military training. In 1926, he began teaching duties at the Zhukovskii Military Air Academy[1].

He was promoted to the rank of Lt. Gen. of Aviation on June 4, 1940[2].

Samoilo retired in 1948[1].
