Senatorov joined the Red Army in 1930 and graduated from the 8th Odessa Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1932[1].
From February, 1937 to March, 1938, Senatorov served as a Soviet volunteer pilot in the Spanish Civil War, commanding a fast bomber (SB) squadron. He completed 100 combat sorties and was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on March 14, 1938 at the rank of Colonel[1][2].
In May, 1938, Senatorov became Deputy Commander of air forces for the Independent Red Banner Far East Army. In September, 1938, he became Deputy Commander of air forces for the 1st Independent Red Banner Army, and was promoted to Commander of air forces for the same unit in June, 1940[1].
At the start of Operation Barbarossa, Senatorov was still serving as Commander of air forces for the 1st Independent Red Banner Army. In July, 1942, he became commander of the 9th Air Army, which was stationed in the Soviet Far East. In September, 1944, he became Assistant Commander for Training of the 16th Air Army, and remained in that position through the end of the war[1].
