Sergodskii joined the Red Army in 1937. He completed the Borisoglebsk Military Pilots School in 1938[1].
At the start of World War II Sergodskii was part of the 69th Fighter Regiment, stationed in Odessa and took part in the defense of the city. By the end of September, 1941 he had completed 139 combat sorties, made over sixty attacks on ground troops and equipment, participated in twenty-two aerial engagements, and scored three individual victories plus five shared. For his combat actions he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on February 10, 1942[1].
In 1942 Sergodskii participated in battles around Kharkov and in the Battle of Stalingrad. By then he was a squadron commander, flying Yak-1 fighters. His combat sortie count increased to 228[1].
Sergodskii was killed in a non-combat related aircraft crash on December 24, 1942, during an aircraft test flight[1].
