Serov joined the Red Army in 1941 and completed the Krasnodarsk Military Aviation School for Pilots the same year[1] graduating with the rank of Sergeant[2].
He served at the front starting in April, 1942. On June 26, 1944, while flying alone in an La-5 Serov encountered a group of seven enemy aircraft. He shot down two of the aircraft, but perished while executing a Taran attack against a third. By April, 1944 Serov had completed 203 combat sorties, took part in 53 aerial engagements, and scored twenty individual and six shared victories. He was posthumously awarded Hero of the Soviet Union on August 2, 1944[1].
