Sharapov joined the Red Army in 1924. He completed the Air Force Military Theory School until 1925, and the Borisoglebsk Military Pilots School in 1927. From 1927 to 1931 he rose from junior aviator to flight commander and then unit commander. From 1931-35 he served as commander of the 24th Aviation Squadron in the Black Sea Fleet, and from 1935-1937 as commander of the 31st Fighter Aviation Brigade in the Baltic Fleet[1].
He was arrested and imprisoned from June, 1937 to August, 1939[1].
After release from prison, he served as commander of a squadron in the Borisoglebsk Military Pilots School from 1939-1940. In 1940, he became assistant commander of the Bataisk Aviation School[1].
During World War II, from 1941-42 he served as deputy commander of the 62nd Aviation Brigade in the Black Sea Fleet. He then became commander of a brigade in the Naval air forces pilots school, and served in that position from 1942-43. From 1944-45, he served as commander of the Levanov Naval Aviation School[1].
