Sherman entered West Point in 1906, and graduated third in his class of 83 on June 15, 1910. His initial duty assignments were in the Corps of Engineers[1].
Sherman began his flight instruction in his spare time, studying with his former West Point classmate 2nd Lt. Thomas Milling and later also with 2nd Lt. Henry Arnold, both of whom were assigned to flight duty at the Army's aviation school in College Park, Maryland. Sherman applied for aviation duty, and in September, 1912 was detached from the Corps of Engineers and sent to College Park[1].
In February, 1913, the College Park school was order to transfer to Texas City, Texas due to increasing tensions with Mexico. Sherman was one of five officers and twenty-one enlisted men in what would officially become the First Aero Squadron (provisional) on March 5, 1913[1].
