Skomorokhov entered the Red Army in December, 1940, completed the Bataisk Military Aviation School in March, 1942, and began flying in combat in December, 1942[1].

After the war, Skomorokhov completed the Frunze Military Academy (in 1949) and the General Staff Academy (in 1958), served as commander of the Gagarin Military Air Academy (in 1973) and as a Deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, and attained the rank of Marshal of Aviation[1][2].
