Soviet Military Ranks

[edit] 1917-1924

After the Russian Revolution, traditional individual military ranks were abolished and the only form of rank was based on the position that the person occupied, for example "Division Commander" (Komdiv) or "Brigade Commander" (Kombrig). From highest to lowest, the "ranks" for senior commanders were:

"Rank" Abbreviation Notes
Army Commander 1st Class Komandarm 1 ranga
Army Commander 2nd Class Komandarm 2 ranga
Corps Commander Komkor
Division Commander Komdiv
Brigade Commander Kombrig
