Soviet Military Ranks
[edit] 1917-1924
After the Russian Revolution, traditional individual military ranks were abolished and the only form of rank was based on the position that the person occupied, for example "Division Commander" (Komdiv) or "Brigade Commander" (Kombrig). From highest to lowest, the "ranks" for senior commanders were:
| "Rank" | Abbreviation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Army Commander 1st Class | Komandarm 1 ranga | |
| Army Commander 2nd Class | Komandarm 2 ranga | |
| Corps Commander | Komkor | |
| Division Commander | Komdiv | |
| Brigade Commander | Kombrig |
