[edit] Biography

Vasilchenko served as an aviator during the Russian Civil War, for which he received two Order of the Red Banner awards and reportedly shot down four enemy aircraft[1].

Vasilchenko served as commander of the 6th Fighter Aviation Unit, the 3rd Aviation Unit, the 2nd Independent Fighter Aviation Squadron (1925-27), and the 2nd Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron. In 1927 he became assistant commander for air forces in the Belorussian Military District. Later that year he became commander of air forces for the Red Banner Caucasus Army and served in that position until 1928. From 1928-29 he served as commander of the 10th Aviation Brigade. From 1929-33 he served as assistant commander for air forces in the Volga Military District. He attended the Frunze Military Academy from 1930-32. From 1933 to 1939, he served as the Military Air Attache to France. He was promoted to the rank of Brigade Commander (KOMBRIG) on September 22, 1935[2]. In 1939 he entered the reserves, and served as an instructor at the Zhukovskii Military Air Academy from 1939-40. From 1940-41 he served as assistant inspector general for military schools. On June 2, 1941 he was arrested, and executed on February 13, 1942[3].
