Remarks: The Vietnam War was the largest use of US airpower since World War II, and would mark the US Air Force's first experience fighting against an integrated, Soviet-style air defense network.

  • August 2, 1964 The destroyer USS Maddox, operating off the North Vietnamese coast on an ELINT collection mission, is attacked by three North Vietnamese torpedo patrol boats in what would later be referred to as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident[1].
