Vorotnikov, Alexander Stepanovich

Vorotnikov completed the Sevastopol aviation school in 1912[1].
He went on to command the 9th Corps Air Detachment which fought at the front from the beginning of World War I. Later in the war he went on to command an air division[1].
During the Russian Civil War he commanded Red air forces on the Western Front, and later the Moscow Military District's air forces. In late 1918 he succeeded M. A. Solovov as commander of the Soviet Air Forces (known at the time as the "Main Directorate of the Workers-Peasants Red Air Fleet" and abbreviated "Glavvozdukhflot")[1].
